Saudi economy returns to growth on back of oil price rises

DUBAI, June 5, 2018 (AFP) - The Saudi economy pulled out of recession in the first quarter of 2018 thanks to oil price rises, a think-tank said Tuesday. Capital Economics said the oil-dependent Saudi economy grew by 1.5 percent in the first quarter, after having contracted by 0.7 percent in 2017. "The oil sector was the main driver of the recovery," the London-based group said. Oil prices surged to around $80 a barrel last month from under $30 a barrel in early 2016 after OPEC and non-OPEC producers struck a deal to cut output. As a result of the crash in prices, the economy dipped into negative territory last year for the first time since 2009, a year after the global financial crisis. The OPEC kingpin has posted a budget deficit in the past four years, and it has borrowed from domestic and international markets and hiked fuel and power prices to finance the shortfall. US sets September 1 date for start of N. Korea travel ban

WASHINGTON, Aug 2, 2017 (AFP) - The United States on Wednesday officially set a September 1 start date for a ban prohibiting its citizens from traveling to North Korea. "The Department of State has determined that the serious risk to United States nationals of arrest and long-term detention represents imminent danger to the physical safety of United States nationals traveling to and within the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)," read the restriction as it appeared Wednesday in the US government's Federal Register. "All United States passports are declared invalid for travel to, in, or through the DPRK unless specially validated for such travel," it added. An exemption was noted for approved humanitarian travel and for journalists in some circumstances. China warns Indian army to back-off from Doklam Border-video

India on Wednesday rejected China’s claim that the number of troops engaged in the Doklam standoff had fallen and insisted that peace and tranquillity at the border are an “important requisite” for smooth development of ties. China’s foreign ministry issued a 15-page statement which said Indian troop numbers in the Donglang or Doklam region had fallen from a peak of more than 400 to about 40 at the end of July. The statement also floated the idea that New Delhi and Beijing should sign a new boundary convention to replace the 1890 “Convention between Great Britain and China Relating to Sikkim and Tibet” that is said to have demarcated the Sikkim boundary.
