Government, parties concerned about Kanchanpur incident


KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has expressed its serious concern on the incident in which innocent Nepali national was killed in firing opened by Indian security personnel at Nepal-India border in Kanchanpur district.

Issuing a press statement this evening, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that the incident of firing by Indian security forces targeting Nepali people was deeply saddening and condemnable.

The Indian security forces opened firing at Nepali people who stood against the unilateral act of breaking the culvert that was constructed for the easy movement between Nepal and India as per the agreement without making any consultation with stakeholders.

According to Home Ministry Spokesperson Bal Krishna Panthi, Nepali national, Govinda Gautam, who was injured in a firing by border forces of India died on the way to Dhangadhi for treatment.

The Ministry wished for the eternal peace of the departed soul of Gautam and expressed deep condolence to the bereaved family members, stated the release.

The government has expressed its commitment to exploring solution of all problems through diplomatic channels while calling for the local community to restrain patience in the grief-stricken moment.

Meanwhile, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has condemned the incident of killing of a Nepali national in a firing by Indian security forces along Nepal-India border.

The NC President issued a press statement to deplore the incident. It was an unfortunate incident of firing opened at Nepali people who protested the Indian side unilateral act of dismantling the culvert constructed on a bilateral agreement, reads the statement.

He expressed serious concern over the act of killing of a citizen of an independent and sovereign country, Nepal.
Leader Deuba has demanded the government to talk to the high-level diplomatic channel of India, investigate the incident and take necessary action and provide due security to Nepali people in the area.

Likewise, CPN (Maoist Centre) Province-7 In-charge Lekh Raj Bhatta has expressed deep concern over the killing of Gautam, who is also the area committee of the party. The party has also demanded the government to probe into the incident and declare him a martyr.
